Optical character

Sigma's mirrorless 70-200 f/2.8 is a professional internal-zoom telephoto with six FLD elements, a floating focus group driven by two HLA linear motors, and OS2 stabilisation rated at up to 7.5 stops. It is aimed at sports, events, weddings and portraits, and costs much less than Sony's GM II.

It was Sigma's first stills zoom with an aperture ring, which can be de-clicked and locked, and the switch panel covers focus limiter, OS mode and two custom modes. At 1335g it is heavier than Sony's 1045g GM II, but the multi-material barrel and magnesium Arca-type foot feel built for daily professional use. The 11-blade aperture gives smooth, round backgrounds at 200mm.

Reviewer consensus

Reviewers found it very sharp from 70mm to 200mm at f/2.8, close to Sony's GM II in the centre and only slightly behind in the far corners. Bokeh is smooth and colour fringing is low thanks to the FLD and SLD glass.

The dual-HLA autofocus is fast and tracks well for sports and events, and the stabiliser is effective. The main criticism is weight and length compared with Sony's latest version. Reviewers also note that Sigma's teleconverters work only on the L-mount version, so Sony users get no 1.4x or 2x option.

Owner sentiment

Owners often call it the best value f/2.8 telephoto on Sony E, and many chose it over a used GM or the Tamron 70-180. They praise the aperture ring, the custom switches and the solid, well-sealed build.

The complaints are about weight on long wedding days, a long lens with a big hood, and no teleconverter support on Sony. A few users mention that the minimum focus of 1m at 200mm limits close-up detail work.
