Optical character
Sigma's first 70-200mm f/2.8 designed for mirrorless bodies is a 1,345g internal-zoom lens with optical stabilisation rated at 7.5 stops at 70mm and 5.5 stops at 200mm. Two focus groups, each driven by its own HLA linear motor, move in opposite directions to keep focus fast and quiet, and the optics use six FLD, two SLD and three aspherical elements.
The L-Mount version has extras the Sony version lacks: it works with Sigma's TC-1411 and TC-2011 teleconverters (up to 400mm) and the UD-11 USB Dock for setting the custom mode and focus limiter. The barrel carries a de-clickable aperture ring with lock, three AFL buttons, a focus limiter, OS mode switch, dust and splash sealing and an Arca-Swiss magnesium tripod foot.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers found it sharp at f/2.8 throughout the range at normal shooting distances, with the best results from 135mm to 200mm. One lab test saw softer close-range results at 70mm wide open and at 100mm. Colour fringing is very low, flare is hard to provoke even shooting into the sun, and bokeh is smooth and free of onion rings, helped by the 11-blade aperture.
Autofocus is described as fast, silent and able to track moving subjects, and the stabiliser works well, including in panning mode. Build and controls are rated professional grade. The criticisms are minor: some vignetting at f/2.8, noticeable pincushion distortion from 100mm up without correction, and a tripod collar that cannot be removed. Both reviews call it very good value next to own-brand 70-200mm f/2.8 zooms.
