Optical character
One of the three lenses Panasonic launched with the Lumix S1 and S1R in 2019, and the lighter of its two 70-200mm zooms: 985g against 1,570g for the f/2.8. Its 23 elements in 17 groups include one aspherical, three ED, one UED and one UHR element, focusing is driven by a linear motor, and both zoom and focus are internal, so the length stays at 179mm. It works with the 1.4x and 2x Lumix teleconverters, reaching up to 400mm.
Lens O.I.S. works with in-body stabilisation for up to 6.5 stops with Dual I.S.2 (after a firmware update). A push-pull focus clutch reveals a distance scale for manual focus, the barrel is dust and splash resistant and rated to -10°C, and a removable Arca-Swiss-compatible tripod foot comes in the box. It focuses to 0.92m for 0.25x and takes 77mm filters. In 2026 Panasonic Japan released a renewed version with a fluorine-coated front element.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers report excellent sharpness and contrast across the whole zoom range, even wide open at f/4, with only a small drop-off at the extreme edges and corners. Colour fringing is minimal, distortion is effectively zero with in-camera correction, and ghosting and flare are well controlled. Autofocus is quick, quiet and accurate, and the stabiliser is highly effective. Background blur is pleasant for an f/4 lens, aided by the rounded 9-blade aperture.
The build is solid and weather resistant, and the included tripod foot is welcomed, since rival f/4 zooms sell it separately. The main criticism is price: both reviews call it expensive next to 70-200mm f/4 zooms from other brands. One also notes that the push-pull focus ring will not suit everyone. Both recommend it, and one argues it is the more sensible choice than Panasonic's f/2.8 unless the extra stop is essential.
