Optical character

This was the first native full-frame telephoto zoom for the original A7 and A7R, and for years it was the light, affordable way to get 70-200mm on Sony E. It weighs 840g, keeps a fixed 175mm length through zooming and focusing, and pairs a constant f/4 with Optical SteadyShot and a panning mode.

The optics use AA, Super ED and ED glass with Nano AR coating, and chromatic aberration is well controlled. Close-up ability is limited: it focuses no closer than 1m for 0.13x, and it does not accept Sony's teleconverters. It comes with a focus limiter, three focus-hold buttons and a removable tripod collar.

Reviewer consensus

Reviewers found it sharp in the centre throughout the range, best between 100mm and 135mm, with corners that stay softer at 200mm even stopped down. Lateral and longitudinal colour fringing is low, vignetting is mild except at 70mm f/4, and OSS gives about two and a half stops in testing.

AF is quick and quiet for its generation but trails the XD-motor G2 and the GM lenses on tracking with modern bodies. On 40MP+ sensors it is outresolved by the newer 70-200 designs, so testers now rate it a value pick on the used market rather than a first choice at full price.

Owner sentiment

Owners like its weight, the internal zoom and the white finish, and many used it as a travel and landscape telephoto for years. The image stabilisation and focus limiter get regular praise.

Common complaints are the 1m minimum focus, the lack of teleconverter support, softness at 200mm on high-resolution bodies and dust/moisture sealing that some doubt because there is no rubber mount gasket. Many owners replaced it with the Macro G OSS II.
