Optical character

Sony's first Mark II G Master is 435g lighter than the original (1045g) in the same 88 x 200mm body, which made it the lightest 70-200mm f/2.8 on the market at launch. Four XD linear motors and a floating focus design make AF up to four times faster, and close focus drops to 0.4m at 70mm for 0.3x.

The redesign uses 17 elements, including XA, ED aspherical, Super ED and ED glass, and it is sharp to the corners at f/2.8 with smooth 11-blade bokeh. It adds an aperture ring with click switch and iris lock, an OSS Mode 3, and support for both teleconverters, and it zooms internally.

Reviewer consensus

Reviewers place it at or near the top of all 70-200mm f/2.8 zooms. It is sharp wide open from 70mm to 200mm, with only slight corner softening at 200mm, and it shows very little fringing. AF tracking keeps up with the A1 and A9 III at their top frame rates, and focus breathing is much lower than on the GM I.

The weak points mentioned are mild wide-open vignetting at the ends of the range, a high price, and bokeh that is smooth but not quite as creamy as the best telephoto primes. It keeps its sharpness well with the 1.4x teleconverter.

Owner sentiment

Owners upgrading from the GM I most often mention the weight saving and the faster, more decisive AF for sports, weddings and wildlife. The aperture ring, the hood's filter window and the balance on A7 and A1 bodies are popular.

The complaints are about price, the OSS rattle heard when the camera is off (normal behaviour that still worries new owners), and the hood's size. Some feel the GM I is better value used.
