Optical character

The first constant-f/2 zoom to reach 150mm on full frame, this G Master covers a 50mm standard, an 85mm and a 135mm portrait lens in one barrel. Sony's pitch is that it matches G Master primes for sharpness, and two XA elements plus five ED and Super ED elements back that up. Four XD linear motors drive the heavy f/2 focus group fast enough for 120fps bursts on the A9 III.

It is an internal-zoom lens that keeps its 200mm length and balance while zooming, which helps on gimbals. Breathing is optically suppressed, and the aperture ring has a click switch and iris lock. The cost is 1340g, a 95mm filter thread, no optical stabilisation and no teleconverter support.

Reviewer consensus

Testers found prime-like results: excellent centre sharpness from f/2 across the range, good edges on full frame, negligible longitudinal colour and smooth, natural bokeh from the 11-blade aperture. AF is described as silent, fast and accurate, with low focus breathing for video.

The criticisms are high wide-open vignetting on full frame, flare resistance that is good but not best-in-class, and the missing OSS and teleconverter compatibility. Almost every review questions the price, which sits about $1,100 above the 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II.

Owner sentiment

Wedding, event and portrait shooters describe it as a replacement for a bag of 50/85/135 primes and say the extra stop over a 70-200 f/2.8 is visible in background separation and low-light shutter speeds. The internal zoom and balance get praise from video users.

Owners mention arm fatigue over a full day, the 95mm filter cost, and that IBIS is all they get for stabilisation. Some miss the reach of a 200mm lens.
