Optical character
This was the first 10x zoom for full-frame E-mount, and it is still Sony's only first-party superzoom. It runs from 24mm wide to 240mm telephoto in one 780g lens, with Optical SteadyShot and a dust and moisture resistant barrel. It is built for travel, hiking and family trips where changing lenses is impractical.
Five aspherical elements and one ED element keep the size down, and a linear motor drives the focus group. Close focus is 0.5m at the wide end (0.8m at the long end), which gives 0.27x. It is not a fast lens: f/6.3 arrives early in the range, and the 7-blade aperture renders busy backgrounds.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers found it good in the centre at the short end and clearly softer from about 150mm onwards, with weak corners at 240mm even stopped down. Uncorrected barrel distortion at 24mm is strong and pincushion through the tele range is noticeable, so the lens leans on in-camera correction. Lateral CA is visible but manageable.
AF is reliable for travel and casual subjects but not quick for action. Testers generally rate it as fair value for convenience, and later point to the Tamron 28-200 and Sigma/Tamron superzooms as sharper, lighter or cheaper alternatives.
Owner sentiment
Owners who travel light like the one-lens kit and the OSS, and many say the image quality is fine for web and modest prints. Weather sealing gives them confidence on trips.
The common complaints are zoom creep when carried pointing down, softness at 240mm, the slow aperture indoors, and weight on smaller A7 bodies. Several users replaced it with newer third-party superzooms.
