Optical character

This is the first full-frame zoom to run from 28mm to 105mm at a constant f/2.8. It covers the jobs normally split between a 24-70 f/2.8 and a short portrait prime, and at 990g it is noticeably heavier than a typical 24-70mm f/2.8.

The optical design uses two FLD, one SLD and five aspherical elements, and the 12-blade aperture keeps out-of-focus highlights round when stopped down. An HLA linear motor drives focus, and the barrel carries a de-clickable aperture ring with lock, a zoom lock and two AFL buttons. Close focus of 40cm gives 1:3.1 at 105mm, which is useful for detail work at a portrait focal length.

Reviewer consensus

Reviewers rate it very sharp across most of the range, with the 70-105mm section strong enough for portrait work wide open and only the extreme corners at 28mm needing a stop. Its bokeh at 105mm f/2.8 is smooth and is the main reason testers pick it over 24-105mm f/4 zooms.

The HLA autofocus is fast and quiet, and tracking holds up for events and street work. The drawbacks raised are size and weight, an 82mm filter, heavy vignetting at f/2.8 before correction, and no stabilisation, which matters on bodies without IBIS or for video at 105mm.

Owner sentiment

Wedding, event and travel shooters describe it as a one-lens kit that replaces a 24-70 plus an 85mm prime. Owners like the aperture ring, the zoom lock and the extra reach, and many say it lives on their camera.

The complaints are mostly about weight on long days, the size of the lens and hood in a bag, and missing 24mm for interiors. A few owners note the barrel extends noticeably at 105mm and would have liked OS for handheld video.
