Optical character
Sigma's 28-105mm Art is a standard zoom with a constant f/2.8 aperture all the way to 105mm, reaching further into telephoto territory than a typical 24-70mm f/2.8. On L-Mount it weighs 995g and is 157.9mm long, so it is noticeably bigger than a typical 24-70mm f/2.8; Sigma used a magnesium-alloy section around the mount to keep it under a kilogram.
The optics use two FLD, one SLD and five aspherical elements, and the 12-blade aperture keeps highlights round when stopped down. An HLA linear motor drives focus, and Sigma designed it for minimal focus breathing. The barrel carries a de-clickable aperture ring with lock, a zoom lock, two AFL buttons and an AF/MF switch, plus dust and splash sealing and a water- and oil-repellent front element. It focuses to 40cm throughout the range, giving 1:3.1 at 105mm.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers found it very sharp in the centre across the whole range, with smooth bokeh at the long end and a 12-blade aperture that keeps highlights round. One lab test traced a cap on peak performance to spherical aberration, most visible in the middle of the range. Astigmatism and lateral colour fringing measure low, though some fringing shows toward the edges at 28mm; flare handling is sensible, and focus breathing is negligible.
The HLA autofocus is quick, silent and consistently accurate. The criticisms are heavy vignetting on full frame, clear distortion at both ends before correction, no optical stabilisation, an extending inner barrel, and a size and weight close to a kilogram. One tester liked the extra reach to 105mm, though sometimes missed 24mm at the wide end.
