Optical character
The 24-105mm F4 was the original kit zoom for the LUMIX S1 and S1R. It covers wide to short telephoto at a constant f/4 and adds two things most 24-105s lack: 0.5x close-up reproduction at 105mm from 0.3m, and optical stabilisation that works with the body's IBIS as Dual I.S.2.
Sixteen elements in 13 groups include two aspherical ED, two aspherical, one UED and two ED elements. A linear motor drives focusing and focus breathing is suppressed for video. The lens is dust and splash resistant and has a zoom lock and AF/MF and O.I.S. switches. At 680g and 118mm it is a large lens.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers describe it as a competent rather than outstanding optic. Centre sharpness is high for a zoom of this range and holds steady through the apertures and focal lengths, while the corners are weaker at f/4 and improve from about f/5. Distortion, vignetting at the ends of the range and lateral colour are present in raw files but corrected in camera. One test found it highly resistant to flare even with the sun in frame.
Autofocus is fast and quiet, and the stabilisation gave a real-world gain of around four stops in one test, below the claimed figure. The half-life-size close-up ability is singled out as useful. The downsides are size and weight, uneven bokeh with busy highlights, and a price slightly above comparable 24-105s for other systems.
