Optical character

Sony built this lens for video crews, and it shows: a servo power zoom driven by SSM, separate mechanical rings for focus, zoom and iris, and "Smooth Motion Optics" that limit focus breathing, focus shift while zooming and axis wander. It still autofocuses on stills bodies, so it can work as a 5x constant-f/4 standard zoom for event or documentary photographers who also shoot video.

At 1215g with a 95mm filter thread it is large for an f/4 zoom, and it is sized and balanced for rigs and shoulder mounts more than for handheld A7 shooting. Optical SteadyShot and a dust- and moisture-resistant barrel round out a tool that favours smooth, predictable behaviour over the last word in resolution.

Reviewer consensus

Reviewers treat it as a production tool first. Zoom and focus transitions are smooth, breathing is well suppressed and the variable-speed servo zoom works for slow, even pushes. Centre sharpness is good across the range, with softer corners at the extremes wide open and noticeable uncorrected distortion at 28mm.

As a stills lens it is judged expensive and heavy for what it delivers. Its double linear motor AF is slower than current G and G Master zooms, and the f/4 aperture and 0.15x close-up magnification are unremarkable. Most testers recommend it only to people who need the power zoom and cine-style iris ring.

Owner sentiment

Videographers like the parfocal-like behaviour, the clickless iris ring and the ability to set zoom direction and speed, and many keep it on FX6, FX9 and FS7 bodies as a run-and-gun documentary lens. The OSS helps when shooting off the shoulder.

The complaints are about the weight, the 95mm filters, the price and focus-by-wire that some find vague for pulling focus by hand. Stills shooters who bought it as a walk-around lens often move to a 24-105 F4 G.
