Optical character

Sigma's 20-200 was the first full-frame zoom to run from a true 20mm ultra-wide to 200mm, a 10x range in a 540g body with 72mm filters. Most travel superzooms start at 24mm or 28mm; the extra width here matters for interiors, cityscapes and landscapes on trips where one lens has to do everything.

The 18-element design includes one FLD, three SLD and four aspherical elements. It reaches 1:2 magnification anywhere from 28mm to 85mm, which gives far more flexibility for close-ups than superzooms limited to the wide end. Focus is driven by an HLA linear motor, the barrel is dust- and splash-resistant, and a zoom lock holds it at 20mm. There is no optical stabilisation, so it depends on in-body IS.

Reviewer consensus

Launch coverage frames it as the lightest 10x full-frame zoom and highlights the 20mm start and the 28–85mm half-macro range as advantages over the Tamron 28-200mm and Sony 24-240mm. Sigma's published MTF charts show strong centre contrast at both ends but a clear fall-off in one plane towards the edges at 20mm and at 200mm, consistent with a compact superzoom that is best stopped down a little for corner detail.

The expected compromises are those of any superzoom: f/6.3 from the middle of the range, reliance on in-camera distortion and vignetting correction at 20mm, and no lens stabilisation. Independent lab results were not reviewed for this record and should be checked before the scores are treated as final.

Owner sentiment

Buyers choose it as a one-lens travel kit, and the 20mm wide end and light weight are the features mentioned most. The zoom lock and the half-macro range across 28–85mm are welcome additions on a lens in this class.

The main reservations are f/6.3 in dim interiors without lens stabilisation, the long extension at 200mm, and whether corner sharpness holds up on high-resolution bodies compared with shorter-range zooms.
