Optical character

The G2 replacement for the 28-200 widens the short end to 25mm at f/2.8 and keeps the same 575g weight and 67mm filter thread. It switches from the RXD stepping motor to a VXD linear motor, adds a zoom lock, a 9-blade aperture and Tamron Lens Utility support, and uses a new 18-element optical design.

Close focus is a major upgrade: 0.16m at 25mm gives about 1:1.9, and with lens firmware version 3 the 35-50mm range reaches 1:1.7. Like the lens it replaces, it has no optical stabilisation and relies on in-body IBIS.

Reviewer consensus

Early reviews describe it as a clear step up from the 28-200, with better sharpness across the range, more consistent corners at the wide end and much faster, more decisive autofocus that can track moving subjects. The extra 3mm at the wide end is noticeable for interiors and travel.

The caveats carry over from its predecessor: f/5.6 at 200mm, distortion that depends on in-camera correction, and no VC for bodies without stabilisation. Its higher price against the still-available 28-200 is also noted.

Owner sentiment

Early owners like the wider 25mm start, the stronger close-up ability and the quicker AF, and several upgraded directly from the 28-200. The zoom lock answers a frequent complaint about the old lens.

As a recent release it has less owner feedback. Points raised so far are the lack of stabilisation, the price increase over the first version, and the need to update firmware to get the 1:1.7 close-up mode.
