Optical character

Samyang's answer to Tamron's 35-150mm f/2-2.8 covers environmental portraits through tight headshots with f/2 at the wide end and f/2.8 at 150mm, so event and wedding shooters can replace two or three primes with one lens. It costs noticeably less than the Tamron.

The design uses special glass for 12 of its 21 elements, including six ED elements. The barrel is metal and weather sealed, with a zoom lock, a focus-hold button that can store a focus position, and a custom switch offering aperture control, linear MF and a dolly-zoom mode that links focus and zoom for video. It weighs 1,231g.

Reviewer consensus

Tests show very good centre sharpness throughout the range, negligible longitudinal colour, sensible lateral colour, and less distortion and vignetting than the Tamron. Focus breathing is negligible. Resolution at the frame edge at the long end is weaker.

Autofocus is the main criticism: it is quiet and reasonably fast, but reviewers found it less predictable than the Tamron's VXD, along with weaker flare resistance and a loose zoom ring that can creep. Overall it trades evenly with the Tamron on resolution and gives most of its capability for less money.

Owner sentiment

Wedding and event shooters like the range and the f/2 wide end, and many say it replaced a 35mm and an 85mm prime. The custom switch, focus hold and dolly-zoom mode are popular with hybrid shooters.

The common complaints are the weight on smaller bodies, occasional AF misses or hunting, and zoom creep when the lens points down. An optional tripod collar is sold separately.
