Optical character

Tamron's first all-in-one zoom for Sony FE broke the usual superzoom pattern by opening at f/2.8 at 28mm, a full stop brighter than most rivals, while weighing 575g. It covers 28-200mm in a barrel only 117mm long, takes 67mm filters and focuses to 0.19m at the wide end.

There is no optical stabilisation, so it relies on the camera's IBIS, and the aperture drops quickly through the range to f/5.6 at the long end. The RXD stepping motor is quiet and smooth, which makes it popular as a one-lens travel and video kit.

Reviewer consensus

Reviewers rate it among the best superzooms for full frame: good centre sharpness across the range, the f/2.8 wide end as a real advantage, and image quality that holds up better at 200mm than most 7x zooms. Corners at the extremes are softer and need stopping down.

Distortion is strong at both ends and relies on in-camera correction, and vignetting is high wide open. AF is reliable for general use but not built for fast action, and the lack of a zoom lock and of stabilisation are the main handling complaints.

Owner sentiment

Owners use it as a travel, family and holiday lens and say they rarely change lenses with it mounted. The size, the 28mm f/2.8 setting and the general image quality get repeated praise.

The complaints are zoom creep when walking with the camera pointing down, no switches or lock, the lack of VC on bodies without IBIS, and softness at 200mm wide open. Many later compared it unfavourably with the 25-200 G2 on AF speed and close focus.
