Optical character
Laowa's 35mm tilt-shift combines ±10° of tilt and ±12mm of shift with 0.5x close focus at 22.8cm, so one manual lens covers architecture and interiors, landscape focus-plane control and tabletop product work. The Zero-D design is built to keep straight lines straight, and Laowa describes the optics as apochromatic, with 14 elements in 12 groups including four ED and one high-refraction element. The image circle is large enough for medium format, where shift drops to ±8mm.
The lens mount rotates through 360° in 15° click stops, a supplied Arca-Swiss compatible lens support carries the weight on a tripod, and the front takes standard 77mm screw-in filters. It is a large lens at about 1,350g and 149mm long, with fully manual focus and aperture and no electronic contacts. On L-Mount, Laowa lists several recent Lumix bodies, including the S5II/S5IIX and S1II-series models, as incompatible, so check your body first.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers rate the optics highly. In testing on full-frame mirrorless bodies, image quality held up with no obvious drop at the extremes of the tilt and shift movements, and the only optical weakness noted was some flare when shooting wide open into bright light with a lot of tilt. The ability to get a whole angled tabletop sharp at f/2.8 through tilt was singled out as something other lenses cannot do. The $1,249 price is seen as competitive given that Canon and Nikon offer no mirrorless tilt-shift equivalents.
Handling is the main reservation. The lens is big and heavy, leaves little room between barrel and camera grip, and is really a tripod-only tool. When rotated for vertical shift, the lens weight can overpower the click stops on the shift knob, and with strong tilt infinity focus is no longer reachable. Shift has a centre detent but tilt does not, focus throw is fairly short, and there is no EXIF data or automatic lens correction. Both reviews conclude it is a specialist lens for architecture, interiors, product and creative work rather than an everyday 35mm.
