Testers find the centre very good at f/1.8 and excellent from f/2.8. The midframe and corners are good wide open and very good by f/5.6. Portrait-distance sharpness is very good wide open, while close-ups render softly at f/1.8 and sharpen by f/4. Coma, colour fringing and focus breathing are all well handled, and the bokeh is better than average with some character, though onion rings and double edging show up in highlights.

Flare resistance is the main weakness, especially stopped down. Vignetting is noticeable (about 2.2 EV wide open), and the mild pincushion distortion has some waviness. Autofocus is accurate in normal use but sometimes hunts when switching between near and far subjects or at close range in low light, and clicks audibly in continuous AF. Reviewers also note its size and call it excellent value for $299.
