Optical character

Laowa's 35mm tilt-shift is a near-distortion-free perspective-control lens that also focuses to 0.5x. It has ±12mm of shift and ±10° of tilt on full frame, so one lens covers architecture and interiors, landscape focus-plane control and close-up product work. Its image circle is large enough for GFX and XCD bodies with reduced shift (±8mm).

The tilt-shift unit rotates 360° in 15° clicks, and an Arca-Swiss compatible lens support comes in the box. It takes 77mm screw-in filters, and the 15-blade aperture and APO-type correction help keep colour fringes down at shifted edges. The price of all this is size: about 1.35kg and 149mm long.

Reviewer consensus

Independent testing was still limited at the time of writing. Early hands-on coverage highlights the unusual mix of a 35mm tilt-shift with 0.5x close focus, the freely rotating tilt and shift directions, and the supplied lens support. Laowa's MTF data shows very high contrast at 10 lp/mm across the frame and only a mild drop at 30 lp/mm towards the edge, which suggests strong performance even when shifted.

The main caveats raised are the size and weight compared with Canon and Nikon 24mm and 45mm tilt-shifts, and the fully manual operation with no electronic contacts on Nikon Z. Users of some recent Panasonic L-mount bodies are warned of incompatibility, which does not affect Nikon.

Owner sentiment

Early owners are mostly architecture, product and landscape photographers who value having a native 35mm tilt-shift for Nikon Z, since Nikon's PC-E lenses are F-mount designs that need the FTZ adapter and none of them is a 35mm. The close-focus ability for tabletop work and the low distortion are the most mentioned positives.

The weight and bulk on smaller Z bodies such as the Z5 and Zf, the manual aperture, the lack of EXIF, and the time needed to set tilt and shift precisely are the usual criticisms.
