Optical character

Laowa's 10mm is a 130° rectilinear ultra-wide with low distortion that still takes 77mm screw-in filters, which is rare among 9-11mm lenses. It weighs about 420g and has a removable hood.

Autofocus is offered only on Sony E and Nikon Z, so the Canon RF version is a manual-focus lens with a clicked aperture ring and the same optics. The five blades produce 10-point sunstars from f/4, and the 0.12m close focus allows strong near-far compositions.

Reviewer consensus

Reviewers, testing the autofocus Sony E and Nikon Z versions with the same optics, found the centre very sharp from f/2.8, with the corners soft wide open and at their best around f/5.6 to f/8. Distortion is low for a 10mm, roughly 1-2% and not quite zero, lateral colour is low and easily corrected, and longitudinal fringing was hard to find. Sunstars from f/4 are a highlight.

Vignetting is the main weakness, around 3 to 4 EV wide open and still close to 3 EV stopped down, and stacking filters makes it much worse. Flare resistance is average, with ring-shaped ghosts wide open, and coma is slight and well corrected from f/5.6. Sources disagree on sealing: two found only a mount gasket, while one described the lens as weather-sealed. Build quality was rated highly, and the US price was judged fair for such an unusual focal length, though RF buyers pay that price without autofocus.

Owner sentiment

Owners of the autofocus versions describe it as sharp, compact and well built, with useful autofocus, and one is selling a Laowa 9mm f/5.6 after buying it.

The complaints are a hood that can be very hard to remove and a finish that one owner found scratched and chipped after a few days of use. The barrel is also thick for its focal length. The owner reports read were for Sony E and Nikon Z versions rather than RF.
