Optical character
Canon's RF 7-14mm is a fisheye zoom for full frame and the successor to the EF 8-15mm f/4L. At 7mm it projects a 190-degree circular image, which Canon says is a first for interchangeable lenses on full-frame cameras, and by 14mm it fills the frame as a diagonal fisheye. It is faster than the EF lens at f/2.8 at the wide end and lighter at 476g, even with a built-in drop-in filter slot. A zoom limit/lock switch holds the lens at 7mm for circular shots, or keeps it in the diagonal range on APS-C bodies.
Five UD elements and two replica aspherical elements make up the 16-element design, and ASC on three surfaces targets flare and ghosting. Canon chose equidistant projection so circular images convert cleanly to 2D 180-degree VR in EOS VR Utility. It focuses to 0.15m (0.35x at 14mm), zooms and focuses internally, and uses a leadscrew STM. There is no optical IS, a control ring and lens function button are included, and the barrel is dust and drip resistant with a fluorine-coated front element.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers treat it as a clear upgrade over the EF 8-15mm: wider, faster, lighter and better optically, especially toward the edge of the image. Sharpness holds up well out to the rim of the circle, and the aberrations that do appear at the extreme edge are well controlled and easy to correct. Autofocus is quick and hits most of the time in real event work, and the weather sealing held up in rain.
The drop-in slot for Canon's variable ND and polariser, the zoom lock with its APS-C setting and the removable hood are seen as practical additions. One review also sees the VR conversion as a real use, not a gimmick. The main objection is price: it costs more than the EF lens and much more than manual-focus fisheye zooms and primes from third-party makers, and it remains a niche lens.
Owner sentiment
Early owner reviews are positive. Buyers describe the build as excellent, the images as sharp and the lens as fun to use, and welcome a modern autofocus fisheye in the RF line.
One owner notes that a fisheye is an occasional lens, used when the effect is wanted rather than every day. The few reports so far are short and do not yet cover long-term use, flare or filter accessories.
