Optical character
7Artisans' first full-frame fisheye is a 178-degree diagonal fisheye for Canon RF and other mirrorless mounts. It is a compact, all-metal manual lens with a built-in hood, 11 elements in 8 groups including one HOYA ultra-low-dispersion element, an 8-blade diaphragm and an f/2.8 maximum aperture that makes it usable for night skies and interiors.
The 0.17m close focus allows exaggerated close-up perspectives, and the stepless aperture ring suits video. Depth of field is so deep that at f/5.6 a focus setting of about 0.6m keeps everything from very close to infinity sharp, so the lack of autofocus rarely matters. There are no electronic contacts, so no EXIF data and no aperture control from the camera.
Reviewer consensus
Hands-on testing on a 24MP full-frame body found it unusually sharp for a fisheye, right into the corners even at f/2.8, with negligible colour fringing. A test on a 61MP body was more critical: the centre is only average at f/2.8 and good from f/4, the corners need about f/8, vignetting is strong wide open and only clears by f/8, and some colour fringing shows at the borders. That test recommends it for 24MP bodies rather than very high-resolution ones.
Build and handling are rated highly across the board. The metal barrel, built-in hood and smooth, long-throw focus ring feel well made for the price, and the stepless aperture ring suits video. Flare resistance was judged average to slightly better than rival budget fisheyes. The common caveats are no autofocus, no electronic contacts or EXIF data, no weather sealing and no filter option.
Owner sentiment
Canon RF owners mostly praise the value, the all-metal construction and the smooth focus and aperture rings, and some describe it as a fun addition for an occasional creative perspective. Some note that it is heavier than its size suggests, that vignetting is visible but manageable, and that it focuses close enough for near-macro shots.
The complaints are mostly practical. It is fully manual, which makes quick snapshots harder, one buyer could not get it to take pictures on an R5 and planned to return it, and another reported screws working loose with a warranty claim refused because the lens was bought through Amazon.
