Optical character

7Artisans' first full-frame fisheye is a 178-degree diagonal fisheye for Sony E and other mirrorless mounts. It is a compact metal manual lens with a fixed petal hood, 11 elements in 8 groups (one ED and four high-index elements) and an f/2.8 maximum aperture that makes it usable for night-sky and interior work.

The 0.17m close focus allows exaggerated close-up perspectives, and the clickless aperture ring and short focus throw suit video and VR panorama shooting. With a fisheye at 10mm almost everything is in focus from about a metre at f/5.6, so manual focus is rarely a handicap.

Reviewer consensus

Reviews describe a sharp centre from f/2.8 with softer edges and extreme corners wide open, improving noticeably by f/5.6 to f/8. The official MTF chart shows the same pattern, with contrast holding up well across most of the field and falling off in the outer degrees of the image circle.

It is seen as a good-value way into full-frame fisheye shooting. The usual drawbacks of budget fisheyes apply: visible vignetting wide open, some lateral colour fringing at the edges, no electronic contacts and no front filter option. It was replaced in 2024 by the Mark II with a wider 185-degree view and new optics.

Owner sentiment

Owners like the price, the all-metal build and how easy it is to use: zone focus, set f/5.6 to f/8, and shoot. It is popular for astro, skate and action-style video, VR panoramas and interiors, and the 8-blade aperture gives clean sunstars.

Common complaints are the lack of EXIF data, the fixed hood and front cap, flare and purple fringing with bright sources at the frame edge, and the need to stop down for sharp corners. Some note that it is heavier than its size suggests at around 570g.
