Optical character
The Mark II is a redesign of 7Artisans' full-frame fisheye. Coverage grows to a 185-degree diagonal, the 11-element, 8-group formula now uses one aspherical and two ED elements, and the diaphragm moves from 8 to 10 blades for 10-point sunstars. Close focus drops to 0.15m, almost touching the front element.
It is larger and a little heavier than the original (about 602g, 75 x 95mm), with a new metal barrel, a fixed petal hood, a stepless aperture ring that runs from f/2.8 to f/16 and fluorescent markings that are easier to read in the dark. There are no electronic contacts, so no EXIF data, and no way to fit front filters.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers agree that the centre is sharp and colour fringing is well controlled. A hands-on review on a 24MP Sony body found sharpness impressive right out to the edges and corners and called the image quality excellent for a fisheye. A second review on a Panasonic full-frame body found the edges noticeably softer than the centre and stressed that careful manual focus matters on full frame.
The build gets consistent praise: a solid metal barrel and hood, a metal cap, a well-damped focus ring and a stiff stepless aperture ring that is hard to knock off its setting. With the depth of field this deep, zone focusing at f/5.6 makes the lack of autofocus a minor issue. The criticisms are the usual ones for a contact-less manual lens: no EXIF data, no filter thread, no weather sealing, small aperture markings, and for stills shooters the lack of aperture clicks.
Owner sentiment
Canon RF owners praise the solid metal build, the included case, the extreme 185-degree view and sharpness that several describe as good even at f/2.8. It is popular for astro and creative work, Owners use it on bodies from the R100 to the R5 Mark II, and one says zone focusing with the huge depth of field works well.
The common complaints are the weight, the stepless aperture ring that some would prefer clicked because it is easy to nudge while focusing, the narrow focus ring and the need to magnify the viewfinder for precise focus. One buyer returned it because the camera could not meter through a lens with no electronics.
