Optical character
A 130° rectilinear ultra-wide with low distortion that still takes 77mm screw-in filters, which few lenses this wide manage. Laowa sells it with autofocus on Sony E and Nikon Z, but the L-Mount version is manual focus with a clicked aperture ring on the lens.
The optics are the same 15-element, 9-group design with two aspherical and three ED elements. Five blades give 10-point sunstars from about f/4, and 0.12m close focus allows strong near-far compositions. Laowa also offers a manual-focus build with a 14-blade aperture to order. It weighs about 420g.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers found the centre sharp from f/2.8, with the borders and corners weak wide open and good from about f/5.6, peaking around f/5.6 to f/8. Distortion is low for a 10mm, at just over 2% in one lab test, lateral CA is low and easily removed, longitudinal CA was not visible, and corner colour cast is minimal. Sunstars are well defined from f/4, and coma is slight wide open and well corrected from f/5.6.
Vignetting is the main weakness, at roughly 4 to 5 EV in the raw corners wide open, and stopping down helps only moderately. Flare resistance is improved over older Laowa wides but behind the best lenses, with ring-like artifacts at f/2.8. Build is metal and solid, with a mount gasket but no full sealing, and the price is seen as fair for the focal length. Both tests used the autofocus E and Z versions; the optics are the same on L-Mount.
Owner sentiment
Owners who commented, on the autofocus Z and E versions, describe it as sharp, compact and well built, but say vignetting is very heavy. One says the small hood is nearly impossible to remove, which makes filter changes awkward, and another reports the finish scratched and chipped within days.
Another owner found the edges of vertical panoramas soft at f/9 to f/11 and now stays between f/4.5 and f/8. Commenters asking about the manual-focus versions were disappointed that they have no electronic contacts. No L-Mount owner reports were found.
