Optical character
The AF 10mm F2.5 MAX is a full-frame diagonal fisheye with a 185° field of view and autofocus, which few fisheyes offer. An STM stepping motor drives focus down to 0.15m, so you can push the front element right up to a subject and still let the camera track it. On L-Mount its main autofocus rival is Sigma's 15mm f/1.4 Art Fisheye, which costs several times as much and weighs far more.
The optics use 11 elements in 8 groups, including two ED elements and one aspherical element, behind a bulbous front element with a fixed petal hood, so there is no filter thread. The all-metal barrel weighs about 504g and measures 76 x 94mm. It has a clicked aperture ring with an A position, an AF/MF switch, two function buttons (Fn2 can store two focus distances and switch between them), a sealing gasket at the mount and a USB-C port for firmware updates.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers, including one who tested the L-Mount version on a Lumix S9, found the centre very sharp from f/2.5 and the midframe very good. The corners are soft wide open and need f/8 to f/11. Longitudinal colour fringing is negligible, lateral CA is easy to correct, and vignetting is very high wide open but low from f/8. Autofocus is accurate, if only average in speed, and kept up with skateboarding without dropping focus once locked.
Flare results differ. Wide open, flare and glare are very well controlled even against the sun, but stopped down a ring-shaped flare can appear when the sun is near the centre of the frame. Coma in the extreme corners lasts until about f/8, which matters for astrophotography. Bokeh is busy. Handling points are the exposed front element, an aperture ring that slips out of A too easily, and incomplete support on some Sony and Sigma bodies.
Owner sentiment
Owner feedback is limited so far. One owner, who used it to shoot an aurora, found corner coma hard to see at f/2.8 because the stars are so small in such a wide view. They set the two function buttons to a starlight view and to an infinity focus preset.
The same owner found the focus-by-wire ring easier to turn in the cold than the one on 7Artisans' older manual-focus 10mm fisheye, and the MAX lighter. Their summary is that 10mm, f/2.5, autofocus, a low price and good sharpness add up to a lens worth carrying on long trips, even though the sharpness is not perfect.
