Optical character
The AF 10mm F2.5 MAX is a full-frame diagonal fisheye with a 185° field of view and, unusually for the category, autofocus, and it is one of very few AF fisheyes available natively for Nikon Z. A stepping motor drives focus down to 0.15m, so you can put a subject a few centimetres from the front element and let the camera track it. That makes the lens useful for skate and action work, vlogging and tight interiors, not only as an occasional effects lens.
The optical design uses 11 elements in 8 groups, including two ED elements and one aspherical element, behind a bulbous front with a fixed petal hood, so there is no filter thread. The metal barrel weighs about 504g and carries a clicked aperture ring, an AF/MF switch, two function buttons, a mount gasket and a USB-C port for firmware updates.
Reviewer consensus
Early reviews are very positive for the price. Testers report that the centre is sharp from f/2.5 and that edges hold up better than expected for a 185° design, though field curvature softens the far corners. Flare and ghosting are well controlled even with the sun in frame, and the 9-blade diaphragm gives clean 18-point sunstars. Autofocus is described as quick, quiet and dependable for moving subjects.
The main caveats are about the system rather than the optics. Body support varies by model, so buyers should check 7Artisans' compatibility list for their camera. The exposed front element needs care, filters are only possible behind the lens, and bokeh is busy when you do get separation. Published testing so far has mostly used the Sony version.
Owner sentiment
Early owners like having a fisheye that focuses itself, especially for video where nobody can stand beside the lens to pull focus. On Nikon Z, where most full-frame fisheye options are manual focus or adapted, the native AF and the $449 price are the main attractions.
The complaints so far concern the clicked-only aperture ring for video, the need to check body compatibility and firmware, and worry about scratching the protruding front glass. Owner feedback is still limited because the Z version only shipped in late August 2026.
