Optical character
Sigma's first 35mm F1.2 was the first f/1.2 wide-angle AF lens for full-frame Sony E. It was designed for mirrorless from the start, with three SLD and three aspherical elements to deliver Art-line sharpness at an aperture no one else offered at 35mm.
The cost is size: 1,080g, 138mm long and an 82mm filter thread. It has a de-clickable aperture ring, an AFL button, dust and splash sealing with a water- and oil-repellent front coating, and a large HSM ring motor driving the heavy focus group. It was replaced in 2025 by the much smaller 35mm F1.2 DG II | Art.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers found it remarkably sharp in the centre at f/1.2 and very good across the frame by f/2, with low longitudinal colour fringing for such a fast lens. Bokeh is smooth and the subject separation at f/1.2 is noticeably stronger than f/1.4 lenses. Vignetting wide open is heavy without correction.
The main criticisms are weight and bulk, which make it unbalanced on smaller A7 bodies, and HSM autofocus that is accurate but slower and a little noisier than linear-motor designs.
Owner sentiment
Owners who bought it for low-light events, weddings and portraits love the rendering and say nothing else at 35mm separates subjects so cleanly. The build and de-click aperture ring are well liked.
The most common complaint is weight: many say it rarely leaves the bag on travel days. Others mention the large hood, the expensive 82mm filters and AF that can hesitate in continuous tracking compared with Sony's GM primes.
