Optical character
7Artisans' first full-frame 35mm f/1.4 for Sony E was a $199, fully manual lens with a 10-element, 9-group formula and an 11-blade diaphragm in a small all-metal barrel about 50mm long and just under 300g. It was sold on character rather than correction: busy, bubbly bokeh wide open that smooths out from f/2, heavy vignetting and soft frame edges.
The front-mounted aperture ring clicks in full stops, and the focus ring turns about 115° from 0.4m to infinity. There is a 46mm filter thread and no electronic contacts, so no lens data reaches the camera. 7Artisans later sold a full-frame 35mm F1.4 II with a simpler 7-element design.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers agree that it is not a well-corrected lens. Wide open only a small central area is reasonably sharp, the corners stay soft through f/8, and strong field curvature makes flat or distant subjects difficult; focus at infinity is never fully crisp. Vignetting is very heavy on full frame (much reduced with the electronic front-curtain shutter switched off), flare is poorly controlled, there is some green fringing on high-contrast edges, and the 11 blades give fuzzy sunstars.
The positives are handling and rendering. The metal build feels solid and the focus ring is smooth and well damped with a short, easy throw, although some testers found the aperture ring slightly loose. Wide-open bokeh is busy and distinctive and turns smooth from f/2. Testers recommend it as a fun character lens, not as a general-purpose 35mm.
Owner sentiment
Owners who bought it as an inexpensive creative lens mostly come to enjoy it after some use. They like the build, the handling, the shallow depth of field and the vintage look, and several find it works well for close and mid-distance portraits between f/1.4 and f/2.
The same owners are blunt about its limits. Focus at infinity looks mushy at every aperture, which rules it out for landscapes and astrophotography, the corners are poor and wide-open vignetting is heavy. Some find the f/1.4 bokeh too busy against distant foliage, while others find it smooth against closer backgrounds.
