Optical character
The 35mm F2.0 for Sony E reached US stores in December 2018 and uses the same 7-element, 5-group 35mm f/2 design that 7Artisans already sold in Leica M mount. It is small and simple: all-metal, about 320g, with a 43mm filter thread and a 10-blade diaphragm.
It is a classic rangefinder-style manual lens with a clicked aperture ring from f/2 to f/16, close focus to 0.35m and no electronic contacts. Testers found it cleaner than 7Artisans' faster 35mm designs, with very little colour fringing and round, soft out-of-focus highlights.
Reviewer consensus
Testers found the centre good from f/2 and at its best from about f/4 to f/5.6, with contrast a little milky wide open that cleans up when stopped down. Chromatic aberration is very low, flare resistance is good, colours are pleasing, and bokeh is smooth with round highlights that keep their shape even at f/4, which makes it a capable portrait lens wide open.
The limits are at the edges. Corners need f/5.6 to f/8 even on APS-C, field curvature is visible, and distortion and vignetting are moderate. Both main tests used APS-C bodies and expect full-frame corners to be weaker still. The clicked, full-stop aperture is a drawback for video, opinions on build precision differ, and there is no EXIF data.
