Optical character
The Mark II full-frame 35mm f/1.4 replaced 7Artisans' 2019 original with a simpler 7-element, 5-group design, a 52mm filter thread and a 10-blade diaphragm. It is a compact, fully manual metal lens (284g by the official spec) that sold for $189, aimed at photographers who want a fast 35mm with a soft, warm, vintage look rather than clinical sharpness.
Focus runs from 0.33m, down from 0.4m on the original, to infinity in about 100° of rotation. 7Artisans' spec sheet lists a clicked aperture ring, while the copy tested at launch had a clickless, well-damped ring. There are no electronic contacts, so the camera records no lens data.
Reviewer consensus
We summarise professional reviews only after reading at least two independent ones. Not enough have been published or verified for this lens yet.
Owner sentiment
Owner reports are scarce. One owner using it on a full-frame mirrorless body nearly sent it back but kept it, finding it small, quiet, discreet and easy to handle, with many successful shots and especially nice results in low-light indoor portraits.
The same owner would not use it outdoors for general work, finds it less clean than a modern autofocus 35mm f/1.8 and notes the usual flaws of budget lenses. For distant subjects, they back focus off slightly from the infinity stop.
