Reviewers found it sharp from f/1.2, with good to very good corners wide open and outstanding results at portrait distances, peaking around f/2.8. Its background blur is rated among the best of any 35mm lens, with strong subject separation, well-corrected purple fringing, bokeh fringing milder than on the 35mm f/1.4 Art, and coma that is better than most 35mm lenses and gone by f/2.8.

The complaints are size and weight, heavy vignetting at f/1.2 (around 3 EV), noticeable barrel distortion that relies on profile correction, and only average flare resistance. Autofocus is accurate, with high repeatability, but slightly slower than smaller 35mm primes and suited to slower subjects; the very long manual focus throw was seen as a mixed blessing.
