Optical character

The second Aurora full-frame lens is a $549 metal-bodied 35/1.4 aimed at street, documentary and environmental-portrait work. Its 16 elements in 11 groups include three aspherical, two ED, one SED and two high-index elements, and the lens weighs 490g in Sony E.

Rendering is soft-edged and smooth rather than clinical, helped by a 13-blade aperture. Controls are generous for the price: a de-clickable aperture ring with iris lock, an AF/MF switch, a customisable Fn button, dust and rain resistance, a fluorine-coated front element and USB-C firmware updates.

Reviewer consensus

Reviewers found the centre very sharp from f/1.4 and excellent by f/2, with corners that start soft and darker but reach very good to excellent levels at f/4. Coma and lateral colour are low, and bokeh is smooth with little outlining, which several called the lens's main strength. Vignetting is heavy, about 2.4 to 2.5 EV wide open.

The common criticisms are a slow, deliberate STM autofocus that suits still subjects better than action, noticeable focus breathing, mild pincushion distortion with no built-in profile, and some axial fringing at f/1.4. Flare resistance is average. Against premium 35mm f/1.4 lenses it is less polished, but reviewers rated it strong value at its price.

Owner sentiment

Early owners like the solid metal build, the smooth damped focus ring, and how much control the lens gives for the money. Its character wide open, with soft transitions and good colour, appeals to people who find modern 35s too clinical.

The main complaint is autofocus speed, especially when tracking moving people, and some owners hope later firmware will help. Strong corner vignetting at f/1.4 and the lack of automatic distortion correction mean more post-processing.
