Optical character
The L-Mount version of Sirui's Aurora 35mm F1.4 is a metal-bodied fast 35 for street, documentary and environmental-portrait work, weighing 495g and measuring 100.9mm long per Sirui, slightly shorter than the E-mount version. Its 16 elements in 11 groups include three aspherical, two ED, one SED and two high-index elements, with a fluorine coating on the front element.
The 13-blade aperture keeps out-of-focus highlights round when stopped down a little. Controls go beyond the price class: an aperture ring with a click on/off switch and an iris lock, an AF/MF switch, an AFL/Fn button, a 360-degree focus throw, dust and rain resistance, and a USB-C port on the mount for firmware updates.
Reviewer consensus
Testers found the centre excellent from f/1.4, with the borders and especially the corners lagging wide open and reaching their best around f/4 to f/5.6. Coma is very low and lateral colour is small, and bokeh has very soft edge transitions, which one reviewer called the lens's real strength. Vignetting is high wide open, around 2.4 EV in one lab test, and there is no built-in correction profile.
The common criticisms are an STM autofocus that most testers found slow for moving subjects (one lab rated it quiet and accurate), noticeable focus breathing, weak resistance against bright light, and some axial fringing at f/1.4. Distortion is low. Reviewers tested E-mount and Nikon Z samples; the optics are the same for L-Mount, and all of them rated it strong value for the money.
