Optical character
Viltrox's "Chip" pancake on L-Mount is a 60g lens that Viltrox lists at 13.2mm thin, which turns a Lumix S9 or Sigma BF into a pocketable full-frame camera. The aperture is fixed at f/4.5, there is no focus ring or filter thread, and a slide lever opens and closes a built-in lens cap.
Six elements in six groups, two ED and two aspherical, sit behind an HD nano multi-layer coating and a water- and dirt-repellent front coating. A voice-coil motor moves the whole optical block for autofocus down to 0.32m, and an octagonal aperture plate produces eight-point sunstars. The lens uses the native L-Mount protocol, so cameras apply in-body corrections, and a USB-C port handles firmware.
Reviewer consensus
Testers of this optical design found a sharp centre that suits street and documentary work, but weaker borders and soft extreme corners that can't be improved because the aperture is fixed. Distortion is very low and lateral colour fringing is easy to fix, while vignetting is heavy at roughly 2.8 to 2.9 EV, sometimes with a bluish corner cast.
Autofocus is fast and silent, but there is no way to focus manually. Veiling flare from light sources just outside the frame can be severe, and the eight-ray sunstars from the front mask are long and irregular. Reviewers saw it as a fun, cheap pocket lens rather than a landscape tool; one called it his favourite full-frame pancake, while another rated its optics low.
Owner sentiment
Owners who commented like how small and unobtrusive it is for daytime street shooting.
The complaints are flare from street lights at night that ruined some shots, and one report of a camera freezing on shutter press with this lens attached. Both reports concern the Sony E version.
