Optical character
The 28mm F1.4 Art is a DSLR-era wide prime that Sigma also built with a native L-Mount. Two FLD, three SLD and three aspherical elements, including a large-diameter front asphere, target lateral colour and sagittal coma, so point lights stay largely free of coma toward the corners at f/1.4, which makes it a strong night-sky and street lens.
The DSLR heritage shows in the size: the L-Mount version is 131.7mm long and weighs 960g. It has an HSM ring motor, a water- and oil-repellent front coating and sealing at the mount, focus ring and cover joints, but no aperture ring. It takes 77mm filters and focuses to 28cm. Sigma has since discontinued it.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers found it very sharp across the frame at f/1.4 at infinity, with excellent corners and some of the best coma correction of any fast 28mm; only centre sharpness lags the very best lenses, and close-range results need f/2 to look their best. Longitudinal and lateral colour fringing are low, and background blur is smooth with mild onion rings. Distortion ranges from imperceptible in one lab test to visible barrel distortion in another, which a profile corrects.
The weaknesses are heavy vignetting wide open and flare resistance that drops when stopped down, plus a large, heavy barrel for a 28mm. Autofocus is quiet and accurate, with very good repeatability. Reviewers call it the best fast autofocus 28mm available in its mounts.
