Optical character
Sigma designed the 28mm F1.4 for high-resolution bodies, and it is one of the sharpest 28mm f/1.4 lenses made. Two FLD, three SLD and three aspherical elements, including a large front aspherical, control lateral colour and sagittal coma, so point lights stay as points toward the corners at f/1.4.
The cost is size: the Sony E version is 133.7mm long and 925g, about the weight of a 24-70mm f/2.8 zoom. Unlike Sigma's earlier HSM Art primes it has dust and splash sealing and a water- and oil-repellent front coating. It takes 77mm filters and focuses to 28cm.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers found it very sharp across the frame from f/1.4, with excellent coma correction, low chromatic aberration and moderate vignetting. Several placed it ahead of first-party 28mm options for night-sky work.
The complaints are the weight and length for a 28mm prime and the HSM autofocus, which is accurate on Sony bodies but not as fast or quiet as linear-motor designs. It has no aperture ring or custom controls.
Owner sentiment
Owners praise the corner-to-corner sharpness and clean rendering of stars and city lights, and many use it for astro and environmental portraits. The weather sealing is a welcome change from older Art primes.
The main complaint is bulk: it is described as heavy to carry all day on a compact body. A few mention slow focus in dim light. Its current US price of around $799 makes it good value for those who accept the size.
