Optical character
The FE 28mm F2 is Sony's long-running budget wide prime: a 200g, 49mm-filter lens that costs well under most fast 28mm alternatives. Three aspherical elements (one advanced aspherical) and two ED elements give good centre sharpness from f/2, and a nine-blade circular aperture keeps out-of-focus highlights reasonably round.
It is simple to use: no aperture ring or buttons, a linear-motor AF drive and a dust and moisture resistant design. Sony also sells optional converters that turn it into a 21mm ultra-wide or a 16mm fisheye, which adds flexibility for little weight.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers found it sharp in the centre wide open, with corners that catch up by f/4 to f/5.6. Autofocus is quick and quiet for a lens of its age, and it was often called one of the best-value lenses in the early FE line-up.
The weaknesses are strong barrel distortion and vignetting before correction, some lateral colour, and onion-ring texture in bright bokeh highlights. Newer compact primes from Sony and others outperform it at the edges.
Owner sentiment
Owners treat it as an affordable everyday and street lens, and many keep it because it is light and inexpensive. It is often the first prime bought after a kit zoom.
Recurring complaints are visible distortion in uncorrected files, a plastic feel, and the lack of focus-hold or aperture controls on the barrel. Some owners say the 21mm converter is softer than a dedicated wide lens.
