Optical character
Sigma's 60-600mm DG DN is a 10x zoom from standard to super-telephoto, designed for full-frame mirrorless cameras. Sigma says no other mirrorless lens covers this range. One lens covers events, air shows, sport and wildlife without a lens change. Close focus is 45cm at the wide end, and the 1:2.4 maximum magnification at 200mm makes it a usable telephoto macro. The L-Mount version accepts Sigma's TC-1411 and TC-2011 teleconverters, reaching 1200mm with autofocus. The Sony E version does not.
The optics use 27 elements in 19 groups, including two FLD and three SLD elements. Autofocus uses Sigma's HLA linear motor, and the OS2 stabiliser is rated at 7 stops at 60mm and 6 stops at 600mm, with a panning mode. The barrel combines magnesium, carbon fibre reinforced plastic and TSC, is dust and splash resistant, and supports both twist and push-pull zooming. It has three AFL buttons, a focus limiter, a custom switch you can set up with the USB Dock (L-Mount only) and an Arca-Swiss tripod foot. At 2,495g it is a heavy lens.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers found it sharp across the frame throughout the zoom range, even wide open, with negligible colour fringing and only mild pincushion distortion. Bokeh is smooth for a slow zoom, flare resistance is good and vignetting wide open is modest. Autofocus was described as very fast, quiet and consistently accurate. The OS2 stabiliser impressed both reviewers, and one found slow handheld shutter speeds workable at 600mm.
The main drawback is weight: almost 2.5kg is a lot to carry for standard focal lengths. The tripod collar ring cannot be removed, only its foot. The modest maximum aperture limits low-light work. One reviewer called the $1,999 price reasonable and recommended it specifically to L-Mount users.
