Optical character
Sigma's first mirrorless 100-400mm is a 1,135g, 67mm-filter telephoto zoom that made 400mm affordable on L-Mount. One FLD and four SLD elements handle colour fringing, and the built-in OS is rated at four stops, with a second mode for panning.
The L-Mount version has two extras over the Sony E model: it works with Sigma's TC-1411 and TC-2011 teleconverters (up to 800mm, with AF) and with the UD-11 USB dock. Zoom by ring or push-pull on the hood, and there is a zoom lock, focus limiter and AFL button. Sealing is limited to the mount, and the tripod socket is sold separately.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers found it sharp in the centre across the range and still very good wide open at 400mm f/6.3, with the best results in the middle of the zoom and a small gain from stopping down to around f/8. Corners never quite match the centre but stay respectable, and one side-by-side test found detail close to a far more expensive 100-400mm. Flare control is good; vignetting and pincushion distortion are present but fixed by lens profiles.
The stepping-motor autofocus is quick and near-silent in good light, with some hunting in dim conditions and less confidence than premium rivals on fast subjects. The main complaints are the missing tripod collar, zoom creep held back only by the lock at 100mm, the 1.12-1.6m close-focus range, and sealing that stops at the mount gasket.
