Optical character
Panasonic's first lens to reach 500mm, and the long telephoto the LUMIX S range had been missing for wildlife, motorsport and distant landscapes. It weighs 1,285g without the tripod foot and is 196.1mm long at 100mm, and it works with Panasonic's 1.4x and 2x teleconverters for up to 1000mm at f/10 and f/14.
The 19-element design uses two UED, two ED and two UHR elements, and the 11-blade aperture keeps highlights round. A Dual Phase Linear Motor drives the focus, the in-lens O.I.S. combines with body stabilisation for up to 7 stops (Dual I.S. 2), and close focus of 1.5m at 500mm gives 0.36x for insects and flowers. The barrel has a zoom-torque ring, focus limiter, O.I.S. mode switch, zoom-limit switch and an assignable focus button. It is dust, splash and freeze resistant (-10°C), with a fluorine-coated front element.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers find it sharp across the zoom range, with only a slight drop at the 500mm end, and describe the out-of-focus backgrounds as smooth. Autofocus is quiet, quick and precise, tracks moving subjects well with subject detection, and the combined stabilisation makes handheld shooting at 500mm practical. Chromatic aberration is minimal, and distortion is low at both ends of the zoom.
The main reservation is the slow f/5-7.1 aperture, which pushes ISO up in poor light. The barrel extends by about 8.5cm when zoomed to 500mm, which makes the camera less balanced. Vignetting is visible wide open, and flare shows when shooting straight into the sun. Testers rate the build highly and see it as good value next to Canon's RF 100-500mm, which is bigger, heavier and dearer.
