Optical character

A 10x zoom from 60mm to 600mm, a range no other maker offers for full frame. It is built for air shows, motorsport, field sports and safaris where there is no time to change lenses, and it weighs 2485g, so it is a monopod or tripod-foot lens for most people.

Sigma's OS2 algorithm gives up to 7 stops of stabilisation at the wide end and 6 at the long end, and an HLA linear motor handles focus. The lens focuses to 45cm at 60mm and reaches 1:2.4 at 200mm, so it can also double as a telephoto close-up lens. Dual Action Zoom lets you either twist the ring or push-pull the front barrel, and the magnesium Arca-type foot is detachable.

Reviewer consensus

Reviewers found it consistently sharp from 60mm to about 400mm, with a mild drop at 600mm f/6.3 that mostly recovers by f/8. Considering the 10x range, chromatic aberration and distortion are well controlled, and it compares well with the older DSLR 60-600.

The HLA autofocus is a clear step up from Sigma's earlier stepping-motor telephotos and tracks birds in flight on modern Sony bodies. The criticisms are weight, the 105mm filter size, and a long barrel extension at 600mm. Sigma's teleconverters are not available for the Sony E version.

Owner sentiment

Owners use it for wildlife trips, air shows and sports sidelines, and value going from a wide environmental frame to full 600mm without swapping bodies. The stabilisation and the close-focus ability at 200mm come up often in positive reviews.

The main complaints are its weight for handheld shooting, the front-heavy balance when extended, and f/6.3 in poor light. Some owners say the push-pull action takes practice and that the hood is very large.
