Optical character
The 35mm F1.4 DG II is a full redesign of Sigma's mirrorless 35/1.4: about 14% shorter and 20% lighter than the DG DN, at 530g and 94mm on L-Mount. The new 15-element formula uses four aspherical and two SLD elements to suppress axial colour fringing in and out of focus, and Sigma's new AAC (Advanced Amorphous Coating) targets ghosting and flare.
A floating focus system driven by dual HLA linear motors replaces the old stepping motor, and focus breathing is suppressed for video. Handling adds two AFL buttons, an aperture ring with click and lock switches, dust and splash sealing with a water- and oil-repellent front surface, and a locking petal hood. L-Mount owners also get linear/non-linear focus settings and UD-11 dock support.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers rate it excellent in practically every test. The centre is excellent from f/1.4, the full-frame edges are good, longitudinal colour fringing is negligible and lateral fringing very low, distortion is slight and coma is very well corrected. Out-of-focus areas are pleasant, and its resistance to bright light is rated excellent, with the new coating keeping flare contained even when shooting into the sun.
Autofocus is silent, quick and accurate, with smooth tracking, and focus breathing is well corrected, though a slight shift is visible when racking from far to close. The one clear weakness is very high vignetting on full frame, the price of the smaller body. Testers consider the price fair for the performance, well below Sony's 35mm GM.
