Optical character

The 35mm F1.4 DG II is a full redesign of Sigma's mirrorless 35/1.4. It is 115g lighter and 15mm shorter than the DG DN it replaces, at 525g, and uses a new 15-element formula with four aspherical and two SLD elements, aimed at corner-to-corner resolution from f/1.4 and low colour fringing in and out of focus.

It uses Sigma's newly developed AAC (Advanced Amorphous Coating) against flare and ghosting. Two HLA linear motors replace the stepping motor, focus breathing is suppressed for video, and handling adds two AFL buttons, an aperture ring with click and lock switches, and full dust and splash sealing.

Reviewer consensus

Professional testing was still limited at the time of writing. First impressions point to very high resolution across the frame wide open and well-controlled longitudinal colour fringing, in line with Sigma's MTF charts, and dual-HLA AF that is fast and quiet enough for tracking and video.

The main point raised is that it now matches Sony's FE 35mm F1.4 GM on size and weight while costing less. Expect vignetting wide open that profiles correct, and smaller but real gains for owners of the first DG DN version. This section will be updated as full lab reviews appear.

Owner sentiment

Early owners praise the compact size compared with the previous Art 35, the quiet linear-motor AF, and the dual AFL buttons for portrait and vertical shooting. Many see it as the default fast 35 for Sony E at its price.

Because it is new, long-term feedback is limited. Early comments include the price rise over the outgoing model and questions about whether it is worth upgrading from the DG DN version.
