Optical character
In 2019 Sigma brought the 35mm F1.4 DG HSM's DSLR optics to L-Mount in a longer native barrel: 755g and 118mm, against 665g and 94mm for the SA-mount DSLR version. One FLD and four SLD elements plus two aspherical elements, one of them at the front, target axial colour fringing, distortion and coma, and the nine-blade rounded diaphragm keeps highlights round.
Focus is driven by an HSM ring motor with full-time manual override, and the floating system keeps aberrations steady at close distances down to 30cm. There is no aperture ring and Sigma lists no dust and splash sealing. Sigma has discontinued the L-Mount version.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers rated the centre outstanding from f/1.4 and the edges good, with one test calling it the sharpest 1.4/35 it had measured at the time. Distortion is very low, lateral colour fringing is well corrected, longitudinal fringing is slight, and coma correction is among the best in its class. Autofocus is described as quiet and efficient.
The main weakness is very heavy vignetting wide open. Testers also noted busier out-of-focus backgrounds and weaker flare and glare resistance than a first-party rival, and the lack of weather sealing. Its low price relative to first-party 35mm f/1.4 lenses made it a strong value pick. These reviews tested the DSLR version of the same optics.
