Optical character
The 35mm F1.4 DG HSM launched the Art line in 2012 and set the price-to-performance mark for fast 35s. One FLD and four SLD elements, plus a front aspherical, give high centre sharpness at f/1.4 with smooth, rounded out-of-focus areas from nine curved blades.
The Sony E version is the same optical design in a longer barrel, 120mm and 734g, with a 67mm filter thread and a petal hood. It focuses to 30cm and drives focus with an HSM ring motor. Sigma has since replaced it on Sony E with the lighter 35mm F1.4 DG DN and DG II lenses.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers rated it very sharp in the centre from f/1.4 with good contrast, while corners trail until about f/2.8. Longitudinal colour fringing is visible wide open, and vignetting is moderate. Its bokeh is consistently described as smooth.
On Sony bodies the HSM motor gives accurate but slower focus than native mirrorless lenses, with some audible noise. Reviewers of later 35mm lenses point to it as the older, heavier option, still good optically but outclassed in size and AF.
Owner sentiment
Owners call it a reliable, sharp 35 with pleasing rendering for street, wedding and documentary work, and many still use it years after buying. The price on the used market makes it popular as a first fast prime.
Complaints focus on weight on E-mount bodies, some low-light AF hunting, and colour fringing on backlit edges. Owners who upgraded to the DG DN version mainly cite size and AF speed.
