Optical character
Sigma's first mirrorless-native 35mm F1.4 Art uses 15 elements with FLD, ELD, two SLD and two aspherical elements to keep axial colour fringing and sagittal coma flare low, which makes it useful for night-sky work as well as portraits. The L-Mount version weighs 645g and is 109.5mm long, with 67mm filters and a 30cm close focus.
A stepping motor moves a single-element focus group. The barrel has an AFL button, AF/MF switch, an aperture ring that can be de-clicked and locked, a locking petal hood, dust and splash sealing with a mount gasket, and a water- and oil-repellent front element. L-Mount owners also get linear/non-linear focus ring settings and UD-11 USB dock support. Sigma now sells the DG II version beside it.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers find it sharp in the centre at f/1.4, with a slight haze wide open and corners that improve markedly by f/2 to f/2.8 and peak around f/4. Bokeh is smooth and rounded thanks to the 11-blade diaphragm, but cat's-eye shapes appear well into the frame at f/1.4. Build, sealing and the de-clickable, lockable aperture ring are rated highly, and flare resistance is good, though ghosting shows with the sun in or near the frame.
The main criticisms are autofocus that is quiet but slower than linear-motor rivals for stills, heavy focus breathing for video, some longitudinal colour fringing, and a body that is not much smaller than the DSLR-era 35mm Art. On L-Mount bodies, AF behaves the same as on Sony E. Its price is seen as reasonable for the image quality.
