Optical character
Sigma redesigned the 35/1.4 for mirrorless and got a lens that is sharp across the frame from f/1.4. Its FLD, ELD and SLD glass keeps longitudinal colour fringing low, and it costs about half as much as first-party equivalents.
It renders crisply but not clinically. The 11-blade aperture gives round highlights, and the 0.30m close focus allows tight environmental compositions. The aperture ring has click and lock switches, and the build feels like a much more expensive lens.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers consistently call it one of the best value fast 35s for Sony E. Resolution wide open is close to the FE 35mm F1.4 GM, and coma control suits astrophotography well.
The criticisms are that it is noticeably larger and heavier than the Sony GM (640g against 524g) and that the stepping-motor AF, while quick and quiet, is a step behind Sony's XD linear motors on fast-moving subjects.
Owner sentiment
Owners describe it as a "lives on the camera" lens for documentary and travel work, and many say it convinced them not to buy the GM. The tactile aperture ring with lock switch is popular.
Complaints mention size on compact bodies, a long hood, and occasional focus hunting in very dim light. Sigma's USB dock compatibility and firmware updates through the camera are seen as positives.
