Optical character
Sigma bills the 200mm F2 as the first 200mm f/2 designed for full-frame mirrorless. It targets two jobs: tight portraits with heavy background blur, and indoor sports where f/2 allows a stop faster shutter speed than a 70-200mm f/2.8. The 19-element design uses two FLD and two SLD elements against colour fringing, with Nano Porous and Super Multi-Layer coatings against flare.
The L-Mount version weighs 1,820g and is 201mm long, finished in heat-reflective white paint. OS2 stabilisation is rated at 6.5 stops with a panning mode, and an HLA linear motor drives focus. Sports-line controls include an aperture ring with click and lock switches, three AFL buttons, a focus limiter, OS and custom switches, and a rotating Arca-type tripod foot shaped to work as a carrying handle. It takes 105mm filters and is dust- and splash-resistant.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers describe outstanding sharpness in the centre from f/2 with only a small drop toward the full-frame corners, very low chromatic aberration, well-corrected coma and astigmatism, and smooth backgrounds with round highlights from the 11-blade diaphragm. Autofocus is silent, fast and accurate enough for rugby and other sports. One lab measured about 4.7 stops of stabilisation, short of the 6.5-stop claim but among the best it has tested.
The practical drawbacks are weight and size for handheld work, strong focus breathing for video, a tripod collar that cannot be removed and closely spaced switches. It cannot be used with teleconverters. Flare is well controlled, with only a slight drop in contrast against the sun. Reviewers still see it as excellent value next to the old DSLR 200mm f/2 lenses, while noting it is a specialised single-focal-length lens.
