Optical character

Sigma claims the 200mm F2 is the brightest 200mm for full-frame mirrorless. It is the first 200mm f/2 with native Sony E autofocus. Two FLD and two SLD elements keep it sharp and free of colour fringing at f/2. It is aimed at two kinds of work: tight portraits with heavy background blur, and indoor sports where f/2 allows a stop faster shutter speed than a 70-200mm f/2.8.

It weighs 1800g in a white, heat-reflective finish, with OS2 stabilisation rated at 6.5 stops and a panning mode. An HLA linear motor drives focus. The Sports-line controls include an aperture ring with click and lock switches, three AFL buttons, a focus limiter and a custom switch. A long Arca-type tripod foot doubles as a carrying handle.

Reviewer consensus

Early reviews describe it as extremely sharp from f/2 to the edges, with clean, creamy backgrounds and very little longitudinal CA. Testers point out that it costs a fraction of the old DSLR 200mm f/2 lenses from Canon and Nikon while matching or beating them optically. The stabilisation and AF tracking are rated suitable for indoor sports and events.

The reservations are practical ones. It is heavy and conspicuous, it does only one focal length when a 70-200mm f/2.8 covers far more, and the 1.7m minimum focus distance limits close portraits. Sigma's teleconverters work only on the L-Mount version, so Sony users cannot extend it.

Owner sentiment

Owners who shoot portraits, court sports and stage events say the look at f/2 justifies carrying it, and that the OS makes handheld use realistic. The tripod foot as a handle and the aperture ring get positive mentions.

The main complaints are weight on long days, the attention the white barrel attracts, and the price for a single-focal-length lens. Some Sony shooters regret that the L-Mount teleconverters are not an option on E-mount.
