Optical character
Sigma's first Sports-line lens for mirrorless cameras is a 150-600mm zoom for wildlife, motorsport and other distant action. Its 25 elements include four FLD and two SLD elements, and close focus of 58cm at the wide end gives up to 1:2.9 at 180mm. On L-Mount it works with Sigma's TC-1411 and TC-2011 teleconverters, giving autofocus up to 1200mm, which the Sony E version cannot do.
The L-Mount version is 263.6mm long and weighs 2,100g with its magnesium, Arca-Swiss-compatible tripod socket. A stepping motor with a magnetic position sensor drives the AF, and OS was rated at about 4 stops at launch; with L-Mount firmware Ver.1.1, Sigma now rates its OS2 algorithm at about 6.5 stops at the wide end and 5.5 stops at the tele end. Dual Action Zoom allows both push-pull and ring zooming, and a Zoom Torque switch locks the zoom at the wide end or sets tight or smooth resistance. There are three AFL buttons, a three-zone focus limiter, and custom modes that L-Mount users can configure with the USB Dock UD-11. The barrel is dust and splash resistant and takes 95mm filters.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers rate it impressively sharp in the centre at every focal length from wide open, with corners a little softer but consistent across the range. Bokeh is smooth, distortion is a slight, even pincushion, and vignetting is mild and largely gone by f/11. One test found colour fringing noticeable but never serious, while another struggled to find any. Autofocus locks quickly with little hunting, and the stepping motor is quiet enough for video. The build is described as excellent and on a par with own-brand lenses.
The main complaints are size and weight: at 2.1kg and over 26cm it is not a lens to hand-hold for long, and the tripod collar itself cannot be removed, only the foot. Digital Camera World concludes that it is an excellent, fairly priced super-telephoto zoom for E-mount and L-Mount shooters, with a wider 150mm start than Sony's 200-600mm.
